The VITAMIN D DIABETES CONNECTION

Population studies have found that people with low levels of vitamin D are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people who have higher levels of vitamin D. But the vitamin D diabetes link is not necessarily causal.

In 2010, the Health Sciences Research Institute in Britain reviewed 28 studies involving 99,745 participants to assess the relationship between vitamin D blood levels and diabetes. It found that high levels of vitamin D among middle-age and elderly populations were associated with a substantial decrease in type 2 diabetes. But it was not clear from the studies that the higher levels of vitamin D were protecting people from diabetes or that additional intake through supplements would prevent or treat the disease.

One study found that giving infants doses of 2,000 IU per day of vitamin D during the first year of life may help protect them from developing type 1 diabetes when they are older.
