Strontium Interference with Bisphosphonates (Actonel and Fosamax)

by Darlene Varaleau
(Toronto, Canada)

I am not aware of any studies that warn of a conflict between strontium and bisphosphonates such as Fosamax and Actonel.

Servier (a pharmaceutical company) conducted extensive research on strontium but the focus was on the optimal combination with calcium and vitamin D. Servier markets its formula as an alternative to other osteoporosis drugs and its formula is available throughout much of Europe...but has not been approved in North America. It is recommended as a third tier solution because it must be taken on an empty stomach while being accompanied by sufficient calcium and vitamin D throughout the day. This is a much more challenging regime than taking a pill once a day or once a week.

Anecdotally, I have taken strontium with Evista for two years and did not experience any problems nor did my medical tests reveal any concerns.
